Sirens

Yesterday I head sirens
Coming for you in the night
As I sighed and half-raised from my pillow
My dreams took the form of your plight
You reached from your window of orange
Beseeching the ladders to raise
As your home turned to embers around you
But that wasn’t the end of your days
You stumbled through streets draped with shadow
As blue lights strobed hot pursuit
Loud footsteps echoed your passing
Premonition of conviction’s sour fruit
You screamed and appealed to the heavens
As you fell to the gutter and sobbed
Paramedics rushed by in greyscale
Yourself and your newborn were mobbed
