I was once a giant’s servant:
my function that I could
attend to his minutiae,
whilst he wandered where he would.
I was mindful of his footprints;
I sought for where he’d stood;
with every step I looked behind
and I tried to make it good.
Yet people grew to shun my face,
the dark his shadow cast,
I’d believed myself empowered;
now that stilted notion passed.
I discharged myself from service,
but still recall in dreams
how the world stretched from his shoulder,
where he couldn’t hear the screams.
This one’s a shortened re-write of an old poem.
