The ageing of a poet

Shape-shifting narrative occupying legion personalities
Squatting to project before moving on
Offering up with nursery ebullience
Bursting through the front door with dog-eared colour held aloft
Gap-toothed and triumphant
Wide-eyed and dreamy in a world of possibilities
Innocence lost in the sly pass of upside-down notes
Sleight-of-hand sniggers and puerile braggadocio
Tentative titillation, schizoid regrets
Grown and re-measured, myriad mature mannequins
Cunningly confounded, meaning veiled and disguised
Gushing torrent carrying hide-and-seek flotsam
In vino veritas washing up soberly candid
Spoken with frank clarity, these competing creations
Bellicose broadcasting clutching the soapbox
A tirade of empathy and love
Family of harmony and discord
Winding up wise and prophetic
Anecdotes ancient and acerbic
Reptilian observations unblinking, coughed out with the disdain of years
Querulous, shrilly insistent
Tending towards death
Yet reborn with each blank page

  1. Hmmm - trying a bit TOO hard? Or maybe it's just that it's only 5am over here and I've spent the last week marking lit exam papers....
